In organic chemistry as a Lewis acid. It is the electrolyte in the zinc bromide battery. Zinc bromide solutions can be used as a transparent shield against radiation. In oil and natural gas wells, solutions containing zinc bromide are used to displace drilling mud.

Hygroscopic. Air Sensitive. Store in cool place. Keep container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place. Incompatible with oxidizing agents, strong acids and bases.
