Myelin basic protein (MBP) is the second most ample protein in the central nervous system (CNS) insulating brain nerve cells and the spinal cord. This protein belongs to the family of intrinsically unstructured proteins. MBP binds to the cytosolic surface of the oligodendrocyte membrane. The MBP gene is located on the human chromosome at 18q23.

Myelin basic protein (MBP) is considered as an ‘executive molecule of myelin′ as it participates in the formation of central nervous system (CNS) myelin. Increased levels of MBP in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are observed in acute neurological disorders like traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular accidents, and exacerbating multiple sclerosis. It is also observed at higher levels during chronic progressive disorders like tumor cerebri, dementia, and metabolic disorders.
