| General description【一般描述】 | Vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM1) is activated by transforming growth factor β-1 (TGF-β1) and is part of the immunoglobulin superfamily. The protein is expressed in blood vessels. VCAM1 possesses many extracellular immunoglobulin-like domains, a transmembrane region and a cytoplasmic domain. The gene encoding it is localized on human chromosome 1p21.2. |

It also functions in signal transduction and adhesion of leukocytes to endothelial cells. The protein has been associated with atherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
