Adenosine A2A receptor (ADORA2A) or A2AR is a heptaspanning-membrane-receptor (HSMR) expressed majorly in the basal ganglia especially in the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic striatopallidal neurons. The ADORA2A gene is mapped to human chromosome 22q11.23.

Mutation in the adenosine A2A receptor (ADORA2A) gene is implicated in the pathophysiology of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and panic disorder. A2AR mediates the release of neurotransmitters in γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic neurons in rats.
ADORA2A activation leads to increased levels of cAMP within the cell. It is known to inhibit the inflammatory action of neutrophil. Abnormal expression of ADORA2A (adenosine A2a receptor) might be involved in the development of glioma. Also, downregulation of the gene might promote the susceptibility towards tumor-associated epilepsy.
