Cfl1 (cofilin 1) is also called as actin-depolymerizing factor, an actin binding protein. The CFL1 gene is mapped to human chromosome 11q13.1.

Reorganization of actin cytoskeleton in response to extracellular signals such as TGF-β (transforming growth factor-β) is mediated by CFL1 (cofilin 1), an actin binding protein. CFL1 is closely associated with cell motility and metastasis and regulates invadopodia maturation. Invadopodia are proteins rich in actin and are found in invasive cancer cells and carries out extracellular matrix degradation. Upregulation of CFL1 is observed in a number of cancers including bladder cancer.

Controls reversibly actin polymerization and depolymerization in a pH-sensitive manner. It has the ability to bind G- and F-actin in a 1:1 ratio of cofilin to actin. It is the major component of intranuclear and cytoplasmic actin rods.
