Glycine receptors are group I ligand-gated ion channel (LGICs) proteins that belong to the Cys loop receptor family. It has been reported that there are three polypeptide species: GlyR (48kDa) and GlyR (58kDa) subunits and a tightly bound cytosolic scaffolding protein (93kDa) later named gephyrin. It appears to exist as a heteropentameric proteins with an oligomeric transmembrane protein made up of three α and two β subunits. It has been identified that glycine receptors contains four subunit isoforms (α1-α4) and a single β subunit forming GlyR. It helps in mediating synaptic inhibition in the spinal cord, retina and brain of vertebrates.
