The product of this gene is a membrane protein expressed on the oligodendrocyte cell surface and the outermost surface of myelin sheaths. Due to this localization, it is a primary target antigen involved in immune-mediated demyelination. This protein may be involved in completion and maintenance of the myelin sheath and in cell-cell communication. Myelin/oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) is a major component of the central nervous system. It is involved in several cellular processes including cellular adhesion, in the regulation of oligodendrocyte microtubule stability and facilitates the interactions between myelin and the immune system. It has been reported that MOG may be involved in the completion and/or maintenance of the myelin sheath, and in cell-cell communication. It has also been observed that mutation or polymorphisms in MOG gene could cause multiple sclerosis.
